The Bilbo was a later Spanish development that in this case has an asymmetrical plate that works to guard the hand from both thrusts and cuts. This style guard was usually mounted with a military blade, though guards of similar styles were used with rapier blades. Our Bilbo features no piercework on either plate.

Its affordable and it protects the hand well from hand snipes or accidental hits to the hand on the outside. Becaue one side is bigger than the other for maximum coverage yet lighter than a cup hilt. You will notice the balance difference when you thrust palm up or down. You will feel the weight pull well for a palm up thrust. Palm down thrust is a bit awkward but not bad enough to effect performance. This guard is perfect if you are looking to add a little character to your rapier and stand out a bit. Its great for hand protection and coverage for a cheap price. Its not “light” enough if you are planning to build a light, speedy sword build. 3/5 for looks, 3/5 function. 4/5 for price.
